Dear Editor:
I am a Ward F resident and would like to share my thoughts regarding plans for a recreation center in my neighborhood.
This week I attended a community meeting about the possibility of Jersey City building its first public recreation facility. I’ve seen projects like this happen in other parts of Jersey City but never in Ward F. I attended hoping it was not just another meeting about problems while solutions and next steps are forgotten.
To my great pleasure I left feeling very encouraged. Councilman Robinson is very close to finalizing what will be a 22,000 square foot, state-of-the art recreation and education building. I even like the name: The Frederick Douglass STEM Recreation Center. Newark has nine public recreation centers, while this will be Jersey City’s first.
It’s also impressive that this is getting done at no cost to the taxpayers by using developer wealth to pay for it. Bravo! Moreover, this could be the first of several recreation centers to be built. In the age of COVID-19, racial unrest, and political madness it was refreshing to get some good news. This recreation center being built in Ward F is not simply saying Black Lives Matter, it is showing it.
