On Reading Homer

Dear Editor:

“Heroic Age” my ass:
Armed men and their king
Sailing the wine-dark sea
Landing on a hostile shore
Where other Heroes wait.

No time to think, it’s
Chop stab slash to–
Prove your manhood?
You bury your friends
Drink to the dead
Sleep on your shield.

Was your wife such a dowdy
Scold your big-eyed kids
An unmanning burden
That you played with death
To give life meaning?

I’d have gone AWOL.
If history followed men like me
There’d have been no Troy
No Vietnam no Homer to
Sing of bloody deeds
And turn boy’s heads in that
Well-known fatal direction.
