Bayonne public schools remain virtual until November

The district will reevaluate its plan on a monthly basis

Bayonne public schools will remain virtual until November.

As part of the school district’s continuing efforts to evaluate its learning plan, it’s been determined that instruction will remain virtual until Wednesday, Nov. 4, according to Superintendent of Schools John Niesz.

Nov. 4 coincides with the end of the 1st Marking Period.

Monthly reevaluations

The school district reevaluates each month to determine if public schools should shift to hybrid instruction, which includes both virtual and in-person classes. When the data shows that students can return to classrooms safely, the district will implement a hybrid learning plan.

Niesz reiterated that decisions will be based on the safety and security of students.

“Although virtual learning can be frustrating for students and staff, our ultimate goal is the health and safety of all members of our community while continuing to provide a thorough education for all,” Niesz said in a letter to the community.

The Board of Education approved the virtual-only instruction plan in July, as well as a backup hybrid plan. Under the virtual-only plan, students learn remotely with no in-person instruction.

Instructors have been teaching live sessions from either their classrooms at school or their homes through a virtual learning system called Schoology.com.

The district continues to provide lunch and breakfast via the grab-and-go program. Meals can be picked up at all schools on Mondays and Wednesdays, using the same system as last year.

“We will continue to evaluate the data surrounding COVID-19 and will strive to keep parents, students and staff up to date as plans evolve,” Niesz said. “Please remember to check your email and the BBOED website each day for any updates on the situation.”

Further determinations regarding the instruction plan for public schools may be made at the next Board of Education meeting on Oct. 26 at 5 p.m.
