A mass was held Sept. 18 at Assumption Church, Jersey City, for Carol Oberwanowicz, 87, of Jersey City. She passed away peacefully on Sept. 13. Carol was born in the Lafayette section of Jersey City to Maria Louise (nee Ferrara) and Frank Del Monte. She married her late husband William Oberwanowicz in 1970 and settled in Bayonne where she lived for 40 years before moving to her retirement home in Barnegat. After Bill’s passing she moved back to Jersey City to be close to her family, and spent the last 3 years living across the street from the house she was born and raised in. Everyone who knew Carol can attest to her larger than life personality, she swore like a sailor but had a heart of gold and the gift of gab. Family was everything to her, she connected instantly to anyone she met and remembered minute details of every encounter. More than an Aunt, she was a beacon for what family is and the important bond between generations, she taught the virtues of empathy, humility, laughter, hospitality, and love. Heaven will be a much nosier place and earth much quieter, she will be greatly missed. Carol is survived by her cherished nephews, Joseph, Dr. John, Robert, Anthony, Frank, Michael, Thomas and Albert Del Monte, niece Maria Kuzman and her sisters in law, Carmen and Luba Del Monte. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband William Oberwanowicz and her brothers, Louis, Joseph and Frank Del Monte. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
