In 2001, North Bergen Mayor/State Senator/Assistant Superintendent of Schools Nicholas Sacco moved a 16-17 trailer school into Braddock Park, illegally replacing (diverting), a baseball field and parking lot.
The school is on NJDEP Green Acres protected parkland, usable for recreation/open space ONLY.
Green Acres looked the other way, taking 10 years before issuing violations and telling NB to remove the school.
In 2017, Green Acres told NB “Removing the trailers as quickly as possible is the only scenario we are considering, and is what the Township has assured us will happen.”
In a 2018 special referendum, NB voters approved spending $65 million, which NB promised would purchase and renovate classroom space so that the preschoolers could be moved out of Braddock Park and into elementary school classrooms.
NB has now reneged on its promises to Green Acres and the public; it intends to keep the school in the park permanently.
ALL NJ residents should be concerned because:
1- A voters’ mandate has been betrayed and $65 million is not being spent as promised.
2- Green Acres has disregarded and not enforced its own regulations.
3- State taxpayer money which built the baseball field was wasted.
4- Protected park land was hijacked.
5- 20 years of expensive negotiating has gone nowhere.
This fiduciary irresponsibility and corruption should be investigated by the NJ Attorney General.
Please email email@example.com and ask for an investigation of the Braddock Park diversion before your vote and your protected parkland get betrayed.
