Jersey City firefighters rescued a woman trapped by a fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

On Sept. 29, at approximately 12:39 a.m., the Jersey City Fire Department responded to 76 Hutton St. on a report of a  fire with people trapped above it.

JCFD Companies responded and confirmed a fire on the second floor of a three-story, five-family residence at 76 Hutton St. which has similar buildings attached on both sides.

A woman was at the third-floor window trapped above the fire with heavy smoke behind her.

Firefighters stretched the initial attack line to extinguish the fire and prevent the further upward spread of heat, smoke, and fire to the woman.

Meanwhile, firefighters on the ground stretched a 35-foot ground ladder to the third floor to rescue the woman.

JCFD Companies quickly brought the fire under control, and the woman was assessed by EMTs at the scene but refused medical treatment.

Utilities were shut down to the building.

Five families (eight adults and three children) were relocated by the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire and its origin are currently under investigation.
