Investigation underway in Kearny officer-involved shooting

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sept. 29 in the area of Bergen and Passaic Avenues in Kearny, according to a press release.

Shortly before 8 p.m., an officer with the Kearny Police Department saw a reported stolen white Hyundai Sante Fe with Florida plates traveling south on Passaic Avenue.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, at which time the driver reversed and then allegedly drove toward the officer before fleeing the scene.

One officer fired his weapon during the incident.

The vehicle was recovered a short time after having crashed with a tractor-trailer cab in Newark, but the driver has not been located, nor has he or she come forward at this time.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

As is standard protocol, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has been notified, and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is working with the State Attorney General.
