Understanding Procedures for the Election

In New Jersey, this year’s general election has been organized with different procedures from what we are used to, due to concerns about the Coronavirus.  This year, most New Jerseyans will be voting by mail.

How can I vote by mail? All active registered voters in New Jersey will automatically receive their ballots in the mail.  Then you can cast your vote, sign it, seal it, and return it.

You can return your completed ballot in one of four ways:

Mail:  It must be postmarked on or before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, and be received by the county’s Board of Elections on or before November 10…OR…

Secure Ballot Drop Box: Place your ballot in one of the county’s secure ballot drop boxes by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3.  The only drop box in Bayonne is located in front of City Hall at 630 Avenue C, between 27th and 28th Streets…OR…

Board of Elections Office: Deliver your ballot in person to the Hudson County Board of Elections by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3.  Its address is 257 Cornelison Avenue in Jersey City…OR…

Polling Place: Bring your ballot to your polling place by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3.  NOTE:  There will be only nine polling places in Bayonne on November 3, so your location may be in a different place this time. The Hudson County Board of Elections is confirming those locations.  For more information on those special 2020 polling places, please call the Hudson County Board of Elections at 201-369-7740.

What to do if you have not received a ballot in the mail:  If your ballot has not arrived in the mail by October 12, track your vote-by-mail status online at Vote.NJ.Gov or contact the Hudson County Clerk at 201-369-3470.

Can I vote in person?  You may return your vote-by-mail ballot at your polling place on Election Day, once that location has been announced.  It will be listed at Vote.NJ.Gov.  If you report to a polling place and do not have a ballot with you, you will be provided with a provisional paper ballot.  Accommodations will be made for people with disabilities to use an accessible voting device.

Voter Registration:  You must be registered by October 13 in order to vote. Visit Vote.NJ.Gov to check your registration status.
