When life gives coffee and orange juice, give back

Bayonne police gave away coffee and OJ from the cancelled Coffee with a Cop event

Bayonne police officers gave out coffee and orange juice at the recent food distribution at 16th Street Park.
Tropicana donated the drinks to the BPD for the Coffee with a Cop event that was scheduled for Oct. 7 at 16th Street Park. Due to COVID-19 concerns, Police Chief Robert Geisler opted to delay the event, which would have featured discussions with police officers.
Safety first

“Late last week, I was informed that the parent organization of Coffee with a Cop cancelled this year’s National Coffee with a Cop Day due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Geisler said on Oct. 5. “Out of an abundance of caution, the Bayonne Police Department will follow suit.”

Though there were safety measures in place, according to Geisler, he felt that it was best to reschedule it for a later date.

The postponement came as the city witnessed a small rise in cases on Oct. 8, climbing to 18.

“I made this decision with the health and safety of our community and the health and safety of our police offers as my priority,” Geisler said. “I am disappointed that this event is cancelled. This is an event that I, the members of the Bayonne Police Department, and members of the community have been looking forward to.”

Paying it forward

Geisler said he “looks forward to a time when we can all meet again without the threat of contracting COVID-19.”

Meanwhile, the department faced a new issue: What to do with the donations?
The solution was to give them to those who need it most.
Officers gave the drinks to residents who came to 16th Street Park on Oct. 7 for the Bayonne Food Bank distribution.
Chief Geisler said, “I would like to thank everyone at Tropicana for their continued support of the Bayonne Police Department and for allowing us to repurpose this extremely generous donation to benefit those in our community who can use it the most.”
