PATH’s Exchange Place station will be closed this weekend, starting Friday, Oct. 23, at 10 p.m. and reopening on Monday, Oct. 26 at 5 a.m., for construction work to support the replacement of escalators.
The Exchange Place station also is scheduled to be closed over the weekends of November 20-23 and December 4-7 during the same hours as part of the installation project.
The weekend closures are necessary for the installation of a structural framework required to replace three Exchange Place escalators, which were severely damaged during Superstorm Sandy.
Each of the three existing station escalators must be dismantled and removed before new escalators are installed.
The installation of each escalator is expected to take about seven months.
As of today, the scheduled end date for this repair work is the second half of 2022.
Free shuttle bus service will be available around the clock for affected riders to the Newport and Grove Street stations, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system will cross-honor PATH riders during the weekend closures. The light rail does not operate 24/7.
All Sandy repair work at Exchange Place is part of PATH’s Capital Projects program and is federally funded.
PATH has already replaced one of the Exchange Place elevators at the street level and is continuing to work on the second elevator.
