Secaucus eyes regulating radio frequencies for first responders

The Town Council introduced on Oct. 13 stipulating that if a new building is being constructed or renovated, police and firefighters can communicate through their radio frequencies while in the building.

The public hearing will take place at the Nov. 10 council meeting at 7 p.m.

North Bergen hires police officers

North Bergen has hired seven new police officers: Paul Alvaredo, Anthony C. DeOrio, Michael A. Derin, Nicholas Garcia, John P. Nunez, and Al-Abed Taha. Four are Latino, two are Caucasian, and one is Arabic-Caucasian. The total number of officers is 140.

The Koalas of Secaucus

A program, koalasofnyc.com, in conjunction with Mayor Michael Gonnelli, aims to save koalas from bush fires in Australia. District students raised more than $2,000.

Hoboken unveils ‘General Lumber Way’

Hoboken honored a longtime family business, General Lumber, with a ceremonial street renaming at Second and Clinton streets. The company has played a central role in helping the city rebuild after hurricanes, floods, fires, and other natural disasters.

Secaucus family thanks police and firefighters

Jodie Gallegos presented donations to police to thank them for finding her lost brother, John, who has Alzheimer’s and wandered away from home. She presented checks to the department and the K-9 unit.

Union City man sentenced 

A judge sentenced Jonathan Ortiz-Guananga of Union City to nine years for the charge of Death by Auto. He pleaded guilty for his involvement in a May 2019 collision on Paterson Plank Road in Jersey City that caused the death of Adriana Riano, 32, of North Bergen.

Hoboken blood drive Nov. 6

A blood drive will beheld on Nov. 6, from 12 to 6 p.m. at the Multiservice Center at 124 Grand St. Appointments are mandatory. Go to https://donor.cbsblood.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/52684

Donors must wear face masks, bring ID, weigh at least 110 lbs., and eat before donating.

Jersey City residents charged in fatal shooting

New Jersey State Police arrested four Jersey City residents for their alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of two men on Oct. 25 at the Meadowlands Racetrack, according to the NJSP.

Tariq Gathers, 24, Victor Geslicki, 19, Nyshun Morris, 19, and a 16-year-old male were charged with murder, among other offenses.

Hoboken launches online zoning map

The interactive map features information on zoning, redevelopment areas, historic districts, and flood zones, with links to zoning ordinances, tax maps, and redevelopment plans. Visit www.hobokennj.gov/zoning-map.

‘Attachment’ exhibit opens in Jersey City

Art House Gallery will present “Attachment,” paintings, drawings, and installations by Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern from Nov. 7 – 29.

The reception is Nov. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Cast Iron Lofts, 262 17th St.

Additional gallery hours are Nov. 22 and 29, noon to 3 p.m.
