Dear Editor:
As a recently retired Humanities Principal in Scotland, I watched with incredulity as America voted for a former reality star to become the most powerful person in the Western world.
Cards on the table, I never liked Trump, being aware of his business failures and his carnival barker persona – something which jarred when contrasted with the measured tones of President Obama. His attitude to women and non Caucasian people very quickly became public knowledge and only served to deepen my distaste for this truly horrible human being. His erosion, ably enabled by the Republican Party, of the validity of the pillars of US democracy, such as the Supreme Court, the Justice Department (remember Matt Whittaker?), and his constant undermining of the intelligence services leaves me fearful for the ripple effect his actions will have on would be dictators throughout the world.
Should Trump be re elected on November 3rd, his baser instincts will be unleashed. His grift will multiply exponentially. He will, no doubt, install yes men/women who will do his bidding leading to the persecution of, so called enemies. His racist tendencies will become more apparent in his legislation and his allies will no longer be free democratic nations such as Canada, Australia, France, Germany and the UK. Rather, the newly energized dictator I believe him to be will extend his dealings with Putin, Erdogan and any number of like minded so called, ‘strong men’. I do hope Biden/Harris are successful in this election.
Alexander Markie
