Voters okay Jersey City Arts Trust Fund

Jersey City will be the first municipality in New Jersey to establish an Arts and Culture Trust Fund, according to early unofficial election results from the Hudson County Clerk’s Office after voters said “yes” to municipal question 1.

The trust will be funded by taxpayers through a tax of $0.02 per $100 of assessed property value meaning that a property assessed at $100,000 would pay no more than $20 per year to benefit local artists and arts organizations.

The tax revenue will be used to support creative and cultural activities, including but not limited to, performing, visual and fine arts, music, dance, graphic design, film, digital media and video, architecture and urban design, humanities, literature, arts and culture education, historic preservation, museum curation, crafts, and folk arts.

57,501 voters answered the ballot question in which 63.6 percent of the voters, a total of 36,585 votes,  voted in favor of the new tax and trust fund, according to the early Nov. 3 unofficial results.
