As we consider the future, it is important to take a look at the biggest sources of jobs in New Jersey’s private sector. They are all likely to be major sources of employment when the economy picks up again. As of 2018, before the Coronavirus, the four largest providers of private sector employment were healthcare, retail trade, transportation/distribution/logistics, and leisure and hospitality.
The healthcare sector was the only one in the state that added jobs every year from 1990 through 2018. Here in our community, Bayonne Hospital, Barnabas, immediate care clinics, medical doctors, osteopaths, chiropractors, dentists, and other healthcare providers are major sources of employment. As of 2018, the healthcare business employed 13.9 percent of the private sector employees in New Jersey. The Coronavirus crisis has proved how vitally important our healthcare professionals are for all of us.
The retail trades were responsible for 13.1 percent of private sector employment as of 2018. There is no doubt that the virus and the related 2020 recession have had a very bad impact on retail jobs. Many retail chains and individual stores have closed. That being said, several retail chains and individual retail stores have set up shop in Bayonne this year or have plans to do so. For example, Lidl, the German-based grocery chain, is set to open this month on Route 440.
The transportation/distribution/logistics industry employed 11.7 percent of private sector works in our state as of 2018. As a port community, Bayonne understands the importance of this sector. Currently, Lincoln Equities is constructing a logistics facility on the former Military Ocean Terminal. We can expect this operation to become a major employer in the future. It will join trucking companies, bus lines, and other employers who have been here for many years.
The leisure and hospitality industry is another significant player in New Jersey’s economy, with 11.1 percent of private sector employment as of 2018. Given our state’s numerous beach resort communities, this statistic should not be surprising. New Jersey also has numerous hotels that house tourists and business people who visit New York City. In the years ahead, we can expect major hotels to be constructed in Bayonne. These hotels will take advantage of the presence of the Cape Liberty Cruise Port in our community. They will also be linked to tourist attractions in our metropolitan area.
The City of Bayonne welcomes jobs. We look forward to a future that will provide jobs in all sectors of the economy.
