Pilar Pasada's designer masks are an artsy alternative

A North Bergen fashion designer has donated thousands of reusable face masks to the township for use by students in the school district.

North Bergen was the recipient of more than 1,200 high-quality designer face masks donated by FacecoverUS on Thursday, Nov. 12.

The donation comes as the school district mulls a possible shift from virtual instruction to a hybrid plan. That shift is contingent on the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in North Bergen, where cases have been skyrocketing in recent weeks.

Mayor Nicholas Sacco was on hand to personally thank company owner Pilar Pasada for the generous donation, along with Schools Superintendent Dr. George Solter and Commissioners Hugo Cabrera and Allen Pascual.

Pasada wanted to create less intimidating face covers than those commonly worn. She launched FacecoverUS with the help of her husband. Masks are handsewn, machine washable, and “built to last.”

“We would like to give a shoutout and thank you to Pillar Pasada of FacecoverUS for the donation of over 1,200 masks for our High School students!,” Mayor Nicholas Sacco said. “It is greatly appreciated.”

The face masks are designed to be less intimidating and more comfortable than traditional masks.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the latest science affirms that cloth face coverings are a critical tool in the fight against COVID-19. They reduce the spread of the disease, particularly when used universally within communities. Cloth face coverings help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others.

Get tested

Residents are urged to get tested and socially distance.

North Bergen has opened a new testing site at Braddock Park for walk-up or drive-thru on Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. Tests include the COVID-19 Nasal Swab and Serology Antibody Test.

No appointment is necessary. There is no out-of-pocket cost for township residents; no insurance copay. Two other free testing sites are available by appointment only with proof of residency.
