A funeral mass was held Dec. 9 at Saint Aedan’s, The Saint Peter’s University Church for Salvatore L. Cassaro, 76, of Jersey City, passed away on Dec. 4. Born in Jersey City, he was a lifelong resident. Sal was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School and Saint Peter’s University. He was an educator for over 38 years at Essex and Hudson Catholic High Schools. Sal also served as the track coach at both institutions. He received the teacher of the year award from the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). Sal was the parochial “B” elected representative and an elected officer with the NJ Catholic Track Conference where he also was a recipient of 40 years’ service award. He was a Member of the track coaches association in Essex and Hudson County and NJSIAA Cross Country, Track and Field Official. After retiring from the classroom, he worked at the Yanitelli Recreational life center at St. Peter’s University. Sal was an avid watcher of football and baseball, especially his NY Yankees. Finally, he passionately enjoyed watching his grandchildren play various sports. He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia. father of Christopher and Michele Cassaro and Jennifer Stern (Robert). Grandfather of Joseph and Gianna. Brother of Rosina Ruane (John) and Lisa Beth Cullum (Joseph). Also survived by sisters-in-law, Mary Galvin, Joan O’ Grady and Barbara Mitchell. brother-in-law Jack Coyne (Jackie) and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
