Jersey City man charged after allegedly burning children with lighter

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit has arrested a 21-year-old Jersey City man on charges that he abused a nine-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl.

According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, Jersey City resident Jaimear Butler, 21,  is charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a crime of the third degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, a crime of the fourth degree; Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes, a crime of the third degree; Aggravated Assault, a crime of the third degree; and Witness Tampering, a crime of the second degree.

On Dec. 28,  members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit were notified by the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency about an allegation of two abused children who live in Jersey City.

The investigation revealed that Butler allegedly physically abused both children by intentionally burning them with a cigarette lighter on their bodies.

Law enforcement arrested Butler on Jan. 4, at approximately 4:30 p.m. at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutor Esther Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit for the investigation and arrest.

The above charges are merely accusations. Butler is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
