A Time for Unity

×

A change in presidential administrations is always a good time to take stock of our nation’s condition.  Last week, in his inaugural address, President Joe Biden emphasized the need for national unity, which is vitally important during the Coronavirus pandemic.  President Biden set the proper tone for this time of crisis.  During 2020, the Coronavirus spread across the country and around the world.  As the virus spread, the economy was seriously affected.

As President Biden said in his speech, “A once-in-a-century virus silently stalks the country.  It’s taken as many lives in one year as America lost in all of World War II.  Millions of jobs have been lost.  Hundreds of thousands of businesses closed.”

President Biden’s words summarized clearly the impact of the pandemic in 2020 and early 2021. The best way to improve the health of the nation and turn the economy around is through an effective vaccination campaign against the Coronavirus.  We must all unite behind the cause of good health for all people.  We will be able to make progress as a nation and as a community once we beat the Coronavirus.  We are the country that invented numerous technologies and put men on the Moon.  Americans can get the job done.

If we all work together, from the federal government down to the community level, millions of people can be vaccinated. During the next few months, we expect more Coronavirus vaccines to be approved for distribution. This will have the effect of increasing the supply of vaccines with the potential of reaching millions of people.

Here in Bayonne, several departments and agencies have been holding phone and video conferences for months to deal with the Coronavirus. We have been able to start vaccinating various groups of people, due to our unity as a community.  The health professionals from Bayonne Medical Center, nurses from the Bayonne Board of Education, the Bayonne Health Department, and many others are working together to vaccinate as many people as the supplies will allow.

Our goal as a nation must be to vaccinate the overwhelming majority of the population during the coming months.  When we succeed at this goal, we will be able to start returning to normal life.  In the meantime, if we all work together, we can bring this crisis to an end. We can start to see light at the end of the tunnel, knowing that it is not an oncoming train.
