Hoboken police save woman from Hudson River

Hoboken police officers rescued a woman who had fallen into the Hudson River on Feb. 6 after she climbed over a railing to get a better view of the city, according to the Hoboken Police Department.

At approximately 3:32 a.m., the department received a 9-1-1 call about a woman who fell into the Hudson River near Pier 13.

The 23-year-old from Berkley Heights was out with friends and her brother when they wanted to get a better view of New York City and take pictures.

The woman climbed over a railing and because of the snow on the ground she did not see gaps between the pier and a neighboring area of the pier that is closed to the public, causing her to fall into the Hudson River

Her brother attempted to rescue her but was unable to and called 9-1-1.

As the officers were searching the area, Sergeant Robert Roman and Officer Michael Straten were waved down by the brother near 12th Street and Sinatra Drive North.

Roman grabbed his water rescue bag from his police car, and they both jumped over the railing and onto the pier.

They immediately located a hole in the pier that dropped more than ten feet deep and into the Hudson River where the woman was submerged waist high and holding onto a piece of metal.

They deployed the water bag and, she was able to secure herself with it as other officers arrived.

Lieutenant Michael Costello took command of the scene. Emergency Services Unit Sergeant David DiMartino, ESU Police Officer Francis McCourt, ESU Police Officer James Barbro, and Police Officer Jesse Castellano assisted with the rescue.

A second water rescue bag was deployed along with a life preserver ring from the ESU Truck.

DiMartino and Straten lowered themselves halfway into the hole, with Barbro, Roman, and Castellano holding on to their legs so they would not fall into the river, in order to secure a rescue ring around the woman and ultimately pull her out with further help from Costello and McCourt.

She was treated by Hoboken EMS and transported to Hoboken University Medical Center.
