A Bayonne man was arrested after allegedly stealing a vehicle with the owner in it, according to the Bayonne Police Department.

Freddy Mauricio was taken into custody on Feb. 21 at approximately 4:56 p.m. from the area of Andrew St. after being identified as a suspect in a reported Motor Vehicle Theft and Kidnapping.

At 11:42 a.m., the male victim, 41, from Bayonne reported that he left his vehicle running while double parked in front of his residence on Kennedy Blvd. to unload packages.

Who’s in the driver’s seat

As he walked to his residence, he observed a male, later identified as Mauricio, peering into his vehicle. When the victim returned to his vehicle, he observed Mauricio seated in the driver’s seat.

The victim immediately entered his vehicle from the passenger side and ordered Mauricio to exit the vehicle. Mauricio disregarded his orders and drove off with the victim inside the vehicle.

The victim was able to shift the vehicle into park, causing the vehicle to stop. Mauricio then spat at the victim before exiting the vehicle and fleeing the scene by boarding a nearby bus.

The victim provided photos and a description to officers who searched the area but were unable to locate Mauricio. At 4:56 p.m., an officer in the area of Andrew St. observed a man matching the description.

The investigation led to Mauricio being positively identified as the actor and taken into custody.
