A memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date for Padre Pedro Navarro, formerly of Union City, New Jersey. Born in Gran Canaria, Spain, he passed away Feb. 5. Padre Pedro entered the seminary in the Canary Islands. He continued his studies for the priesthood in Havana, Cuba; Quebec, Canada and Oviedo, Spain. Pedro was ordained to the priesthood on September 12, 1963 in the Cathedral in Havana, Cuba and remained there until 1968. He then went to Caracas, Venezuela where he co-founded the Parroquia Nuestra Senora de la Caridad (the patroness of Cuba). While in Venezuela, he visited a remote Amazon village and lived with the village people for a couple of months. From Caracas he came to Union City, New Jersey in 1976, where Archbishop Gerety assigned him to the St. Michael’s Monastery Parish Church. In 1978 he became the parochial vicar at St. Augustine’s Church, where he remained for over two decades. There are thousands of people in Hudson County who were baptized or were married by Padre Pedro. Even after retirement he continued to serve the Hispanic communities of the Archdiocese of Newark, in particular St. Peter’s (Belleville), Our Lady of Libera (West New York) and St. Rocco’s (Union City). Padre Pedro was a loyal friend, a devoted Priest, an intellectual, an avid reader and a great preacher. He will be greatly missed by many, but especially by his five surviving siblings and in-laws, as well as his many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and one great-grandniece. Services arranged by the Leber Funeral Home, Union City.
