FRED ANDERSON, JR.

Funeral services were held March 3 for Fred Anderson, Jr. 77, of Jersey City. He died Feb. 24 at home. Fred was born September 20, 1943 in Eutaw, the county seat of Greene County, Alabama. He grew up in a household of his mother, three brothers and grandmother Mary Eliza Mack, the daughter of William and Lorena Mack who were born enslaved in Greene County in the 1850’s. Fred and his family attended Second Baptist Church, later as a teen Fred taught Sunday school which he enjoyed. He graduated from Carver High School in Eutaw in May of 1961 at age 17, and the following summer he migrated to Jersey City where he spent the rest of his life. He married Phyllis Maye in 1975, and they had one son, Jason Anderson and one daughter, Courtney Anderson. They all survive. Also surviving are his brothers James and Lucious (Melanie) Grace Anderson his stepmom and a nephew Jerry Anderson. Fred was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Eliza, his youngest brother, Leon, his father Fred Anderson Sr. and his mother Annie Byrd Anderson. Fred descends from a very large family in Greene County, Alabama and leaves behind many cousins that he remained close to throughout his life. He was also a friend and brother-in-law to members of Phyllis’ family. Fred made lots of friends during his school years in Eutaw and to the very end he regarded them as family. The love and care that they have expressed in his final hours are a testimony to the good and decent life that he lived. Services arranged by the Greenville Memorial Home, Jersey City.
