Hoboken announces meeting on Rebuild By Design construction

Hoboken and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will host a virtual community meeting on Wednesday, March 31 at 7 p.m. to discuss the beginning stages of the Rebuild by Design project which includes overnight construction starting next month.

The project, which aims to protect the city from flooding caused by storm surges,  will begin with the construction of sewer improvements in South Hoboken in early April.

The DEP will be separating portions of the existing combined sewer system into separate sanitary and stormwater lines to help prevent storm surge from the Hudson River from penetrating the city through the sewer system.

Next year, the DEP will begin construction of the above-ground resist structure and flood protection measures in South Hoboken.

Because of construction, there will be temporary road closures and detours in the areas of Sinatra Drive, Newark Street, River Street, Hudson Street, Hudson Place, and the intersection of Hudson Street and Observer Highway.

To minimize the traffic disruptions construction will occur overnight in some areas.

According to the city, the DEP is working closely with the city, Hoboken Police Department, Hoboken Fire Department, NJ Transit, and PANYNJ to mitigate traffic, commuter, and noise disruption.

The pre-construction community meeting on March 31 will introduce the Rebuild by Design project team, present an overview of upcoming construction activities, anticipated work schedules, and upcoming closure hours. The DEP will also provide community contacts for any non-emergency-related inquiries regarding the project.
