Body recovered after fatal brush fire in WNY

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is investigating


A body was recovered after a brushfire in West New York, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.

On April 7, at approximately 1:25 a.m., members of the West New York Police Department reported a brushfire behind the West New York Swim Club in the area of 60th Street, JFK Boulevard East and Anthony M. Defino Way.

The North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department extinguished the fire. After it was placed under control, investigators found the burned remains of a human who has not yet been identified.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 4:35 a.m. The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

A joint investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Arson Task Force is investigating the case with assistance from the West New York Police Department.
