Son of Jersey City murder victim arrested on Mother’s Day

On Mother’s Day, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Jersey City Police Department arrested Terrance Nelson, 29, of Jersey City, wanted for the death of his mother, 60.

Homicide Unit detectives and Jersey City police officers arrested Nelson without incident at his mother’s home at 18 Virginia Ave.  just after 8 a.m. Sunday, May 9.

Nelson was charged with Murder, a first-degree crime.

On Thursday, May 6,  just before 1 a.m., members of the Jersey City Police and Fire Departments responded to a call of a disturbance at 18 Virginia Ave. where a one-alarm fire was underway.

Units found a female victim on the building’s first floor in critical condition.

The victim, later identified as Jacqueline Nelson, was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:14 a.m.

The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The fire was reported under control at approximately 1:21 a.m.

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department for the investigation and arrest.

The above charges are merely accusations. Nelson is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
