Over 45 percent of Bayonne residents 12 and up have had one dose

That figure is 61 percent for residents 18 and over

Fire Chief Keith Weaver delivered the weekly COVID-19 video update on behalf of Mayor James Davis. As of May 27, Weaver said 61 percent of residents over the age of 18 are fully vaccinated, and 45 percent of all residents over 12 are fully vaccinated.

“55,524 doses have been administered to residents, which equates to 61 percent of the population having received at least one dose of the vaccine,” Weaver said.

The city of Bayonne has been conducting a very aggressive vaccination plan, according to Weaver, with doses available each week to residents at the Korpi Ice Rink.

The Pfizer vaccine is administered Tuesdays and Thursdays at the ice rink. The Moderna vaccine will be administered to residents 18 and over on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Anyone under 18 must have their parent’s or guardian’s permission.

Residents can walk in at the ice rink behind Bayonne High School at 669 Avenue A, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Appointments are not needed but can be made between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

More reopening ahead

“[May 27] marks the last day for most of the stringent safety restrictions put into place by the state of New Jersey for most of this health emergency,” Weaver said. “We return to a more normal state for vaccinated residents as masking, social distancing, and gathering regulations are all being amended.”

As of May 28, fully vaccinated residents no longer have to wear masks, social distance or limit the size of public gatherings.

“I would offer precaution, however,” Weaver said. “Please use common sense in your activities, as good hygiene and clean hands can go a long way in preventing coronavirus as well as many other illnesses.”

COVID by the numbers

Due to the significant drop in coronavirus cases, the COVID-19 testing that has been taking place at Veterans Stadium is ending on May 30.

COVID-19 cases continue to decline after having plummeted dramatically in early May. There were 9 residents COVID-19 positive  as of May 27. According to OEM, “the numbers are trending down,” decreasing from 20 last week.

The number of hospitalizations remains low, as most residents recover at home. There were two COVID-19 patients at BMC as of May 27. OEM does not have data on Bayonne residents in other hospitals.
