To celebrate National Bike Month, Hoboken will install 150 bike racks and 350 bike parking spaces by the end of the year.
The initiative will increase public bike parking by roughly 20 percent.
The Hoboken Department of Transportation is prioritizing
Bike parking is part of the city’s COVID-19 recovery strategy, as well as the city’s Vision Zero pedestrian safety plan which encourages safe, alternative transportation options.
“Expanding bike infrastructure in the City of Hoboken is beneficial for so many reasons – there will be fewer cars on the road when we make it easier and safer to travel by bike, especially for kids,” said Councilwoman Emily Jabbour. “Installing more bicycle parking locations is also a great way to advance the goals of Vision Zero by daylighting intersections to improve pedestrian safety, such as those that were installed at the corner of 8th and Park.”
The city seeks suggestions from residents and businesses on where the new bike racks should be. A submission for is at https://tinyurl.com/y9ppykww. Residents can fill out the form multiple times.

Quality-of-life issue
As of May, 2021, Hoboken had 409 public bike racks, accommodating 1,764 bikes.
The website also includes information about Hoboken’s Bicycle Rack and Bicycle Corral sponsorship program.
Through the program, organizations can pay a fee to help cover the cost of purchasing and installing a public bicycle rack or bicycle corral outside their businesses, offices, or buildings.
Since the program was launched 10 years ago, several businesses and civic groups have helped subsidize the expansion of bicycle parking at dozens of locations.
Business owners and condominium associations interested in sponsoring a public bike rack or corral outside their buildings can complete the above submission form.
Mayor Ravi Bhalla plans to expand the city’s bicycle lane network, including a new protected bike lane on Sinatra Drive between Fourth and 11th Streets. The city expanded its unified bike-share system with Citi Bike.
The new bike-share program will offer 29 docking stations and 300 bikes, including e-bikes.
“Increasing bicycle parking in public places will assist residents as they bike to transit hubs, patronize our businesses, and visit friends and family,” Bhalla said. “Along with the recent expansion of Citi Bike in Hoboken and a network of new bike lanes on City and County streets, we are committed to investing in bike infrastructure, which improves the quality of life within our Mile Square.”
“When bike parking is readily available near your destination, it’s one less thing to worry about when you’re heading out on your bicycle,” said Bike Hoboken president Chris Adair. “Bike Hoboken looks forward to having more available bike parking throughout Hoboken.”
