Jersey City officer dies in motorcycle crash

According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, on July 16, just before 2 a.m. Jersey City police officers responded to the scene of a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Communipaw Ave. and Woodward St.

Officers found a motorcyclist with serious injuries, later identified as one of their own, Officer Morton Otundo, 40, of Jersey City.

Investigations indicate that the Yamaha motorcycle was traveling east on Communipaw Ave. when it collided with a Ford Escape traveling west on Communipaw while the car was making a left turn onto Woodward St.

The off-duty police officer was pronounced dead at approximately 2:30 a.m. at Jersey City Medical Center.

The cause and manner of death are pending an investigation by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The driver of the car, a Jersey City resident, 30, was transported to JCMC for evaluation.

No charges have been filed at this time.

Union City man arrested following arson of synagogue

Oswaldo Domingo Xil-Argueta, 29, of Union City has been arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated arson and burglary in connection with a July 3 fire at a synagogue and the Mesivta Sanz Yeshiva on 318 34th Street in Union City, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez.

The above charges are merely accusations. Xil-Argueta is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
