Funeral services took place August 17 at St. Joseph’s Church, Jersey City, for Maria Scafidi, 91. She passed away August 11. Maria was born in Sicily. She met her husband, Carmelo, and left her homeland to come to the United States of America and settled in Jersey City to begin her life as wife and mother. Together with Carmelo, she ran and operated the Court House Market. Maria was well known by many as an amazing cook and brought that skill to the Market, which later became more of a deli where she was well known for her weekly specials. She retired from the business in 1995 and became a full time Grandma which she excelled at. In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She spent many hours teaching her adult grandchildren all of her homemade secret recipes. She taught her great grandchildren how to count in Italian and how to sing songs from her childhood like “Batti Manini”. Maria will forever be remembered as the sweetest, most caring mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother. Beloved wife of the late Carmelo Scafidi, devoted mother of Maria Ingraffia (Hon. Salvatore), Salvatore Scafidi (Deborah), Linda Tropeano (Anthony), Joseph Scafidi (Kerri), and loving sister of Adelina Brennan and the late Salvatora Spinella. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many others who loved her. The family would appreciate donations to be made in Maria’s name to the Lymphoma Research Foundation at www.lymphoma.org.
