Private funeral services have been held for Joanne Calderone (Chwalk), 67, a special education teacher and life-long resident of Jersey City, who passed away on Oct. 14. Joanne was born in Jersey City on July 13, 1954 to Walter and Beatrice Chwalk. She graduated from Dickinson High School and Jersey City State College (now New Jersey City University) and has had a successful career as a Special Education teacher since. Joanne married her longtime friend and love, Michael, on December 13, 1984. Their son, Michael, was born the next year. Joanne is survived by her husband, Michael; her son, Michael Taras; her sister, Carolee Trifon; her brother, Walter Chwalk; her brother-in-law, Thomas Calderone and sister-in-law, Emmy Chwalk. She is also survived by her nieces, Judy McKeown, Ruthann Conklin, Victoria Plunkett, Amy Frezzo, Gabriella Calderone and Carly Calderone; great-nephews, Stephen Mayer, Michael Plunkett and Brett Frezzo; great nieces, Lauren McKeown, Erin McKeown, Olivia Guardino, Paige Plunkett and Jessica Plunkett. All of whom loved her dearly and will never forget her. Besides spending time with her family and friends, Joanne had a passion for the beach and enjoyed hours in the sun with her toes in the sand.
