Funeral services took place Oct. 15 at St. Nicholas Church for Richard F. Callahan, Jr., 57, longtime resident of Jersey City. He passed away, peacefully, while surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Oct. 9. Richard was predeceased by his beloved mother, Marilyn A. Callahan (nee Williams), father Richard F. Callahan, Sr., infant sister Sherri Ann Callahan, grandparents Dorothy and George F. Williams, Sr. and uncle George F. Williams, Jr. Richard was very proud of his Jersey City roots and was a member of Brothers of the Jersey City Heights. For many years, he was an active member of the Washington Park Little League where he coached his children’s baseball teams. Richard was an active member of the Jersey City Elks Club Lodge 211 for 14 years. Richard was a loving father, loyal friend and hard worker. He was known to be outspoken, funny and a good time to be around. Richard truly valued the simple things in life. Some of his favorite things to do included listening to Led Zeppelin, playing pinball, hanging at the Jersey Shore and watching his favorite sport teams. Let’s go Red Sox! and Fins up! After receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis in December 2019 Richard was adamant to “fight the fight”. Since then, he spent many joy-filled days with his family and friends. Last Spring, his dream of going to Fenway Park to see “his” Red Sox was fulfilled. Richard danced his way onto the jumbotron alongside his children and grandchildren, as the Red Sox secured the WIN. This past summer during a family vacation in the Outer Banks, Richard spent his 57th birthday fishing on the open water. Richard also attended the annual Brothers and Sisters of Jersey City Heights reunion where he spent an amazing weekend reconnecting with childhood friends from all over the country. Richard is survived by his beloved children, Richard B. Callahan and his fiance Johanna DeLeon, Meghan Green and her husband Joseph, Kierstyn Connors and her husband Daniel, Courtney Callahan and her significant other Anthony Aponte, and Dylan Callahan, former wife AnnMarie Callahan, cherished grandchildren Richard, Zachary, Bray and Mara, devoted sister Robyn Sue Lord (nee Callahan) and her husband Kevin J. Lord, Sr., his nieces and nephews, Kayla (goddaughter), Kevin, Kage, and Kenzie Lord, many aunts, uncles and cousins, numerous brothers and sisters of the Jersey City Heights and Dylan’s sister Samantha and their mother Sandra Zimmer.
