Jersey City Public School Superintendent Franklin Walker to retire

Walker served for decades in the school district

Jersey City Public School Superintendent Franklin Walker will be retiring, following decades of experience in the school district. His retirement was reported by the Jersey Journal and Hudson County View.

Walker has served as superintendent since early 2019; he became interim superintendent at the beginning of 2019 following the tumultuous departure of former Superintendent Marcia Lyles, and was later appointed for a full-time role in December of 2019 by the Board of Education, with his appointment set for about four years.

During his tenure, Walker had to oversee financial struggles in the school district due to cuts in state aid, and then the COVID-19 pandemic that had a massive effect on education in New Jersey’s second largest city.

Before becoming the Superintendent, Walker had served in the school district since 1974, and took on numerous roles. He was also previously an interim superintendent in 2011 following the departure of former Superintendent Charles T. Epps.

His departure comes just before the upcoming Board of Education elections, where three seats on the Board, including one held by outgoing Board President Mussab Ali, are being vacated.

Walker will reportedly retire in January.
