Bayonne honors five veterans
The Bayonne School District honored five veterans as part of the 2021 Field of Heroes ceremony, including: U.S. Army veteranĀ Harriet Zakutansky; U.S. Army veteran Joseph Kochanski; U.S. Army veteranĀ Harold Spann; U.S. Marine Corps veteran Frank Andrisano, Jr.; and U.S. Navy veteran Brendon Pierson.
Flags will adorn the lawn of Bayonne High School for the month of November to honor veterans. Flags can be purchased from the Board of Education for $5, with all proceeds going to the Joyce Herbert VFW Museum.
Thanksgiving Interfaith Service
The Bayonne Interfaith Association will hold their Thanksgiving Service on at 7 p.m. on Nov. 22 at St. Vincent du Paul Roman Catholic Church at 777 Avenue C.Ā Pastor Austin Newberry of Grace Lutheran Church will be the preacher. Annual Thanksgiving Toss
The Annual Thanksgiving Toss for children age 12 and under will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 24.Ā The Turkey Toss will take place at Veterans Stadium. ChildrenĀ will toss rings onto a turkey cut-out wooden board.Ā The ring toss will start at 1:30 p.m.Ā There will be 4 age groups: 4 and under; 5 to 6 years of age; 7 to 9 years of age; and 10 to 12 years of age. Prizes will be awarded for 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place in each division.
UEZ Christmas Tree Lighting
The Bayonne Urban Enterprise Zone/Ā Special Improvement District will hold its annual Broadway ChristmasĀ tree-lighting ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 5:30 p.m. The event willĀ take place at Lance Corporal Stanley Kopcinski Park near 19th Street andĀ Broadway.
For the ceremony, BroadwayĀ will be closed to traffic from 19th Street, Vinny Bottino Way, to 20th Street. NoĀ Parking signs will be posted from 19th Street to 20th Street on both sides ofĀ Broadway.
At the event, entertainment will be provided by the Bayonne Jazz Ensemble fromĀ Bayonne High School and the Artists Avenue Theatrical Performance Group.Ā Hot chocolate and cookies will be available. Santa Claus will be back this year,Ā along with some surprise friends. Pictures with Santa will take place at the end ofĀ the event. A free, trackless train will offer rides on the street.Ā Anyone coming to the event must wear a mask, due to the COVID-19.Ā Social distancing will be encouraged.
Special Needs Sports Program
Division of Recreation Special Needs Sports Program will team up with the Junior NBA Program of the Year, “BOUNCE OUT THE STIGMA.”Ā The program will geared for kids and young adults with the challenges of Autism, ADHD, Epilepsy, Neurological Disorders, Spectrum Diagnosis, and mental, emotional, or physical challenges.
The clinic is non-competitive and seek to empower participants through motor skill development, confidence building, fun challenges, and a unique blend of positive reinforcement. Personal attention is given to every child.
A day of basketball fun is the agenda to enhance motor skill development, self-confidence, and internal fulfillment with both child and parent. The program creates opportunities for children and young adults with special needs, while also raising awareness about stigmas, bullying, and acceptance to all people and ages.
The program will take place on Sunday, Dec. 5 from 1 to 3 p.m., at the gym at the Korpi Ice Rink at Bayonne High School. Pre-Registration is encouraged, but not mandatory.Ā Register by emailing the Division of Recreation with the participant name, address, phone number, age and name of school.Ā There is no fee to participate.
Basketballs from SNY Play BallĀ
The Division of Recreation has been awarded basketballs from the SNY Play Ball Program.Ā SNY Play Ball is a cross sports initiative that supports youth baseball, softball, football and basketball programs in the New York metropolitan area through unique and comprehensive contributions.
