Nimbus Dance’s perennial Jersey City Nutcracker is back! Presented for the first time ever at the new Nimbus Arts Center, Nimbus Dance will offer 12 performances of the quirky and lovable adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s timeless classic, which takes place in Jersey City and weaves together themes of magic, adventure, family, and friendship.
The highly acclaimed Nimbus Dance performs against a dazzling backdrop of full-scale sets and fantastical projections of illustrated scenes. Audiences are transported across the city – through parks, lively avenues, deserted alleyways, sewers (for an epic battle scene!) and back to the City Hall, with surprises, cheer, and a message of hope and resilience along the way.
Choreographed by Samuel Pott, with animated scenic projections by Jersey City-based video artists, Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger, and a delightful libretto co-written by Alysia Souder and Samuel Pott, Jersey City Nutcracker takes audiences on a magical shopping-cart-turned-sleigh-ride with twists and turns your whole family will enjoy!
“It’s amazing to think how many Jersey City youth have grown up with Jersey City Nutcracker over the years – absorbing the soaring Tchaikovsky music, taking in the dramatic storyline centered around empowered youth characters, witnessing the full spectacle: Nimbus’ extraordinary dancers, costumes, sets, lights, and integrated video projections,” remarked Nimbus’ founding Artistic Director, Samuel Pott. “We hope you’ll join us, for the first time ever at the Nimbus Arts Center, and be charmed by the sense of community and holiday spirit that emerges at Jersey City Nutcracker.”
Jersey City Nutcracker draws together a cast of Nimbus’ professional company dancers, 100+ youth from all over Jersey City, and local celebrities to present an unforgettable holiday experience. Debuting in the youth lead roles of Maria and Christopher/Christina are Michael Fuks (Arts High School, Newark), Alissa Colon (County Prep High School), Nola Walker (Snyder High School), and Elizabeth Volpert (Elysian Charter School).
Jersey City Nutcracker is made possible through the lead sponsorship of Goldman Sachs. Anthony Cammarata, Managing Director in Goldman Sachs’ Corporate and Workplace Solutions division, said, “Arts events like Nimbus’ Jersey City Nutcracker are at the heart of what makes Jersey City the unique and spirited community that it is. Goldman Sachs is proud to sponsor this wonderful production which brings together Jersey City’s diverse residents, young and old, from all different neighborhoods, to celebrate the holidays.”
Attendees can expect wholesome (albeit, a little wacky!) holiday fun with artisan gift vendors, holiday art market, photo ops, and more!
