Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop has tested positive for COVID-19, the mayor announced.
“I have no symptoms but getting tested was important before seeing family for holidays,” said Fulop on Twitter. “I’m thankful for the protection from the vaccine/booster as it would be a different situation without them”
The mayor’s positive test comes as Jersey City is dealing with a massive surge in COVID-19 cases over the past few days.
The city COVID dashboard reported a new daily average over 7 days of 240 new cases as of December 22, and the city recorded its highest number of cases since the pandemic began at 383 cases.
The current available COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be effective at reducing the risk of infection, severe illness or death against the virus.
