Let’s Make Dr. King’s Dream A Reality in Our Lifetime

Dear Editor:

The nation recognizes and pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on January 17, 2019. Dr. King was a true advocate of peace, brotherhood, and equal rights for everyone.

Dr. King had a vison for this nation – a magnificent, prophetic vision of hope. Dr. King expressed – and emphasized – that vision in his legendary “I Have a Dream” speech. Regrettably, it appears that we have “misplaced” his vision. Given the events of intolerance and bigotry that have occurred in parts of the nation, some might be led to believe that we have managed to corrupt Dr. King’s glorious “dream” and turn it into a shameful, haunting “nightmare.”

Yet, in spite of those shameful, embarrassing, and distasteful incidents, this country was founded on the endearing principle that “All men are created equal.” And, as such, every single one of us possesses “Certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

We should grasp and embrace the true spirit of Dr. King’s “dream.” Let us work together to “rediscover” his vision. It is up to all of us to make a sincere effort to replace acrimony and hostility with understanding and compassion, to supplant ignorance with wisdom, to focus on unity instead of division and derision, and to promote equal and basic civil rights for all Americans. Perhaps by making this effort, we can live up to the fundamental “truths” found in the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, all men are created equal.”
