In her brief address to the nation on Jan. 6, 2022, the one-year anniversary of the Capitol riot, Vice President Kamala Harris likened the Jan. 6, 2021 “insurrection” at the U.S. Capitol to Pearl Harbor and the events of “9/11.” That is a bit of a stretch. In reality, the events are very dissimilar.
The Pearl Harbor sneak attack on December 7, 1941 was an act of war by a foreign country; namely, imperial Japan. International extremists; specifically, al Qaeda, carried out the terrorist attacks of “9/11” at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Regardless who egged them on or who instigated the violence at the Capitol; misguided, confused Americans rioted against their (our) own U.S. Congress — democratically-elected senators and representatives.
The real issue is that U.S. democracy – our democracy – has been – is being – threatened by its (our) own people, and not by foreign countries or international violent extremist groups.
Something to ponder in this new year.
