BAYONNE BRIEFS

First quarter property tax payments due

The Bayonne Tax Collector’s Office announced that first quarter property tax payments are due on Feb. 10. The nominal legal due date for the tax bills is Tuesday, Feb. 1, but the Bayonne City Council authorized a grace period through the close of business on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Payments made by that date will avoid a late fee. Property owners may pay their taxes by mail or in person at City Hall, 630 Avenue C, or at Bayonne branches of BCB Bank, or online through the City of Bayonne website, www.bayonnenj.org. By state law, quarterly payments received after the close of business on Feb.10 will incur interest charges dating back to Feb. 1.

There are two payment options at City Hall: residents can pay at the Tax Collector’s Office or at the front of the building. There are boxes inside the two sets of front doors at City Hall where taxpayers can drop off various payments. Tax payment go in the tax box, which is on the left-hand side between the two sets of doors.

BFD briskly beats basement blaze

The Bayonne Fire Department made quick work of a basement fire on Jan. 27, according to Fire Chief Keith Weaver. At 8:27 a.m., the BFD was dispatched to a report of a fire at 133 West 56th Street. Arriving firefighters found a smoke condition and a small fire in the basement.

One hose line was used to extinguish the fire and prevent the fire from extending within the building and the fire was placed under control less than twenty minutes later at 8:46 a.m. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was determined as accidental in nature by a fire investigator. Nine residents were temporarily displaced during the incident and were allowed to return to their residences by the Bayonne Building Department.

Councilman Juan Perez running for re-election

City Councilman At-Large Juan Perez is running for re-election in Bayonne under a slate with Mayor James Davis, First Ward City Councilman Neil Carroll, and Third Ward City Councilman Gary La Pelusa.

Davis so far faces a challenge from City Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski, who has yet to announce any candidates for a council slate. Former Bayonne Board of Education Trustee Michael Alonso is also running for mayor and has not announced a slate either.

Also running for City Councilmember At-Large is Bayonne businesswoman Carissa Lintao and Bayonne Board of Education Trustee Denis Wilbeck.
