Bayonne School District ends virtual instruction option for students

All students are to report to school on Feb. 1

The Bayonne School District will end the remote choice option for students on Jan. 31, according to Superintendent of Schools John Niesz.

The district gave students the option to remain under virtual instruction after schools shifted from in-person instruction for the first week of January due to COVID-19. Niesz said that the district would offer students the option to stay virtual under an asynchronous instruction model for the remainder of January, but students who chose the option couldn’t switch back.

Niesz said the district was reevaluating the situation to determine if it would keep the option for the rest of the 2021-2022 school year. A decision has since been made and the virtual option will be no more. All students are to report to school on Feb. 1, according to a letter from Niesz to the community on Jan. 26.

According to Niesz, current quarantine protocols will continue if students and or employees are exposed to COVID or test positive for the virus. He added that the district will offer free COVID-19 testing for all employees and students in February.

All students and employees can get free testing at the Korpi Ice Rink behind Bayonne High School at 669 Avenue A on Saturdays starting on Feb. 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be a free service provided to only Bayonne school students and our employees.

Niesz said more information will follow.
