Barge crashes ashore in Bayonne

'History repeats itself'

Pushed by strong winds, a large barge broke free from its mooring in Newark Bay and came to rest ashore in the cove between 19th Street and 21st Street on the west side of Bayonne.

The announcement came from the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management at approximately 11:35 p.m. on March 7.

Prior to the barge making its temporary home in Bayonne, OEM had advised the city was going to see high winds with the quick-moving storm that swept over the city Monday evening.

According to OEM, this barge is not a danger to residents. However, everyone is advised to keep clear until it can be properly removed.

OEM ended their announcement about the landed barge with the hashtag #historyrepeatsitself. This is because this is not the first time a barge has crashed into the western Bayonne shoreline.

Not again…

On Oct. 30, 2017, a 300-foot barge crashed ashore at the foot of West 21st Street, in the same exact spot as where the current barge is stranded. That barge was used to store and transport sediment dredged from the bay bed, typically tugged behind large dredging ships when in the process of maintenance dredging. Dredging companies are contracted to perform routine dredging to maintain proper shipping channels.

While Bayonne Fire Department was quick to get to the scene, the barge remained in Bayonne until Nov. 2. The vessel was stuck in the mud in the shallow water by the shore.

The maritime company that owned the barge, The Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Corporation based out of Staten Island, responded on Oct. 30, but was unsuccessful in towing the vessel the first time around. According to OEM at the time, their engineers regrouped and successfully removed the lodged barge during higher tides with bigger equipment.
