North Bergen honors local merchant
Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the Township Commissioners issued a proclamation at a meeting on March 9, naming March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and honoring resident Bob Ceragno for his ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the disease.
The American Cancer Society indicates that colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States among men and women, and is expected to cause about 50,630 deaths during 2022. Colorectal cancer affects individuals of all racial and ethnic groups, and more than 90% of cases occur in people who are 45 years old or older.
Regular colorectal cancer screening, beginning at age 45, is the key to prevention, since screening may detect abnormal precancerous growths and can also find early stages of cancer, when there is a greater chance that treatment will be most effective and lead to a cure.
Ceragno, a survivor of Colorectal Cancer as a result of early screening, has been tirelessly working for years to promote awareness of the disease and to raise funds to research and find effective treatments. The mayor presented a plaque commending Ceragno for his courage and dedication at his North Bergen store, Eye Contact Vision Center, on Friday, March 11. Joining in the presentation were Commissioners Julio Marenco and Allen Pascual, Police Chief Peter Fasilis, and others.
