Bayonne has hung the banner of a resident battling from cancer in front of City Hall.
Janelle Green is a Bayonne resident living with Stage 3 breast cancer, undergoing chemotherapy three times a week while preparing for a double mastectomy. Her friends gifted to her a banner that reads “Stop and say a prayer, a person battling cancer lives here,” and features a large breast cancer awareness ribbon in the center.
While the banner provided an emotional boost to the 38-year-old, it was short lived because her landlord messaged her to take it down after just two days. According to Green, no reason was given.
“I recently learned of one of our neighbors, Janelle Green, who is battling cancer,” Mayor James Davis said. “Janelle, hung a prayer banner outside her home, but her landlord didn’t want that on the side of his house.”
While her landlord may have said no, when Davis heard about Green’s story after it made headlines, he jumped to action.
“I went to meet Janelle and told her that no one in Bayonne fights alone, we stand shoulder to shoulder, help our neighbors, and we are all with her,” Davis said. “Since Janelle can’t hang the banner from her house, we will hang it on the balcony outside city hall, which is just a few steps away from Janelle’s home. Bayonne stands with you Janelle!”
The banner now hangs from the second floor balcony of City Hall next to the Ukrainian flag.
