Federal funds for Gateway Project in Biden budget

President Joe Biden’s newly-unveiled Fiscal Year 2023 budget includes hundreds of millions of dollars for vital infrastructure projects in Hudson County, according to an announcement by the Federal Transit Administration.

This includes $100 million for the Gateway Tunnel Project that will help start construction of a new tunnel for the Northeast Corridor connecting New Jersey and Manhattan. The project includes the Hudson Yards right-of-way preservation project, a new Hudson Tunnel, and the rehabilitation and modernization of the existing North River tunnel. The budget also includes a proposed total of $339,519,539 to continue Portal North Bridge construction work in Secaucus next year.

Officials including U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr., a Democrat who represents the 9th Congressional District which includes Secaucus and Kearny, celebrated the announcement of the additional federal funds.

North Hudson Firefighters promoted

The North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue held a promotion ceremony for five members on Monday at Fire Headquarters. The members that were promoted were James Corso to Deputy Chief, Adrian Prunes to Battalion Chief and Zachary Zellner, Vincent Caruso, and Roberto Ortiz to Captain.

In attendance at the promotion ceremony were North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco, Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner, North Hudson Board Member, Anthony Vainieri, Jr., Executive Director Jeffrey Welz, Executive Director Michael DeOrio, Communications Director Joseph Isola, Chairman of the Management Board Provisional Chief of Department Michael Falco, Deputy Chief Daniel DeOrio, and Deputy Chief Daniel Fresse.

Jubilee Center in Hoboken to become home for nonprofits and educational centers

The Jubilee Center in Hoboken will be transformed into a home for nonprofits and education institutions, following the city’s acquisition of the space last year.

TRUE Mentors will be leasing the space to provide free one-on-one, group, and educational mentoring programs to Hudson County youth between the ages of 7- and 18-years-old. They will move into the first and third floors of the center.

Amnesty event at North Bergen library

The North Bergen Free Public Library is holding an amnesty event for North Bergen and Guttenberg residents in honor of National Library Week.

Return all overdue North Bergen items between April 3 and 9 at any library location and the fines will be forgiven. Only applies to items owned by the North Bergen library. Overdue fines only; does not apply to lost items.

The main library is at 8411 Bergenline Ave. The Kennedy Branch is at 2123 Kennedy Blvd. The Guttenberg Resource Center is downstairs in the Galaxy Towers Mall at 7002 Boulevard East in Guttenberg.

Union City rabies clinic

Union City Mayor Brian Stack and the Board of Commissioners will be offering free rabies vaccines to local dogs. Vaccines will be administered by Dr. Carlos Triana from Summit Animal Clinic on May 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the NJRFR Firehouse at 1600 New York Avenue.

North Bergen EMS hiring

The North Bergen Emergency Medical Services are now hiring Emergency Medical Technicians per diem for $20 per hour. Full-time opportunities are also available for a “competitive salary.”

West New York chess club registration open

Mayor Gabriel Rodriguez, Commissioner Cosmo Cirillo and the Division of Recreation have announced that registrations for the Chess Club are now being accepted. This program is available to all West New Yorkers, ages five to 15.

An original birth certificate or valid United States Passport and two recently mailed proofs of WNY address that have been received within the past thirty days are required in order to register. No junk mail allowed, and participants must live in WNY, no exceptions. Register as soon as possible at the Town Hall Recreation Office at 428 60th Street in Suite 7 on Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This program will begin on Monday, May 2. Activities will take place at the Sunshine Gardens Community Room at 515 54th Street on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays 5 to 8 p.m. Call 201-295-5120 for all recreation information.
