Dear Editor:
The “Women of Action” Award is an annual award dating back to 1994. It is given during the Month of March for Women’s History Month. The intent of this award is to honor and recognize outstanding women within our community. Every March, each Jersey City Councilperson nominates two Women of Action and honors them with a ceremony. This year, that ceremony occurred on March 24.
We are extremely pleased that Arjumand Juweria, Ward C, is among this year’s honorees. Juri, as she is affectionately known to her many friends, truly is a remarkable woman of action. Arjumand’s laudable acts within Ward C truly represent the 5-C ‘s of a dedicated and devoted community leader: “Commitment,” “Conviction,” “Compassion,” “Communication,” and “Cooperation.”
Juri’s many charitable deeds within Ward C clearly demonstrate that she is a strong advocate for selfish service. Arjumand tirelessly and freely gives of herself to feed those in need; she provides them with blankets during the winter. She also has helped families that have been experiencing financial challenges during these troubling times.
Arjumand is a true Renaissance Woman. Her compassion, commitment, and conviction to help those in need have (know) neither borders nor boundaries. Juri has helped to feed the hungry abroad. She also was instrumental in establishing a school and a mosque overseas.
Alexander Pope’s poem, “On a Certain Lady at Court” truly captures Arjumand Juweria’s character.
I know the thing that’s most uncommon;
(Envy be silent and attend!)
I know a Reasonable Woman,
Handsome and witty, yet a Friend.
Not warp’d by Passion, aw’d by Rumour,
Not grave thro’ Pride, or gay thro’ Folly,
An equal Mixture of good Humour,
And sensible soft Melancholy.
`Has she no Faults then (Envy says) Sir?’
Yes she has one, I must aver:
When all the World conspires to praise her,
The Woman’s deaf, and does not hear.
Juri has made Jersey City her home, and we are truly blessed to have her among us.
