North Bergen will use ARP money for further sewer improvements

The township will utilize $265,000 in American Rescue Plan funds to overhaul the sewer at 71st Street

North Bergen is moving to make more sewer improvements using federal funds from the American Rescue Plan.

The North Bergen Board of Commissioners have voted to adopt an ordinance appropriating $265,000 of the ARP funds for sewer infrastructure and drainage improvements at 71st Street. The board voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance at its April 6 meeting.

The improvements to the sewer infrastructure aim to reduce combined sewer overflows and flooding, among other storm water management improvements. The sewer improvements include the replacement of 106 feet of corrugated metal pipe and new reinforced concrete pipe, and all work and costs necessary.

At the meeting, Chief Financial Officer Robert Pittfield explained the planned renovations in the ordinance.

“This is the township again using some ARP money for yet another sewer infrastructure project,” Pittfield said. “This is for 71st Street, where we get a lot of complaints and issues, particularly after big storms.”

This is the second time the township has used its ARP funds to tackle the issue of its antiquated sewer system.

Sewer infrastructure undergoing upgrades

Previously in 2021, the township adopted an ordinance authorizing the use of $550,000 in ARP funds for a sewer improvement project. In total, the township received approximately $17.8 million in federal monies, and that was the first time it was using the funds.

The $550,000 was for a project at 57th and Kennedy Boulevard which entailed installing “bypass piping” to replace older sewer infrastructure. According to Pittfield, bypass piping was required along with deep trench excavation of approximately 15 feet below grade in order to replace 120 linear feet of sewer piping, backfill compaction, and area restoration.

The $265,000 is another small part of what the township plans to do with the rest of its ARP funds throughout the year, including to offset revenue loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the township’s upcoming budget.
