Joanne Hoersch is better known as the resident playwright with Hudson Theatre Works, a Weehawken-based professional theatre company. But when the pandemic hit and theaters were shuttered, she decided to turn her talents to fiction, specifically the romance novel.
“I needed to keep my creativity alive. It felt more precious to me than ever. Writing a romance novel provided some relief from the horror that was going on all around us, an alternate universe of happy endings.”
The result was The Dream Room, which she wrote under the pseudonym Charlotte Glass. “It’s about turning tragedy into a form of intimacy, about the force of imagination, and, of course it’s about not realizing where true love lies, until you almost lose it.”
As for the title room of the book, all she’ll say about it is, “read it and find out!”
Ms. Hoersch has been, at various times during her life, a model, an actor, a director, a two-time recipient of grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a Woolrich scholarship from Columbia University, and a Playboy Bunny.
The experience of working as a Playboy Bunny inspired her play “Bunnies,” which was produced by Hudson Theatre Works in October of 2021. NJArts called it “a riveting drama. [that] delivers a passionate night of theater.”
She is hard at work on the sequel to “The Dream Room,” which will be titled, “Glorious,” and is due to be published in July.

I am a mom of two kids, a small business owner, and a hobby farmer. I just don’t have the time I would like to read but I couldn’t stop reading The Dream Room. Every chance I had to read even a few paragraphs I did: while doing dishes with soapy hands, while prepping laundry, flipping pages and turning clothes the right way out. The characters were so well developed I fell in love with all the secondary characters as well as the main ones and I was disgusted by the antagonist. Kudos to Ms Glass on such an original story. It was nice to read something where I wasn’t quite sure how and where we were going. I can’t wait to read your next work!
5.0 out of 5 stars A Romance Novel That’s Actually Good Literature

As someone who didn’t give a lot of weight to the romance novel genre, I was so surprised how much I loved reading this book. Not only is it well-written, but it is a page-turner: I would have read it in one sitting had I not had to do something else; but I rushed to read the rest the next day. The characters are compelling; the setting — New York City — the perfect backdrop for such an irresistable story as this one is; and the overall message is both progressive and romantic; not an easy balancing act to pull off. But this author definitely pulls it off with aplomb
