Memorial Day Parade set for May 30

The Bayonne Memorial Day Parade Committee has organized the return of the Bayonne Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30. The parade has not taken place since 2019, due to concerns about COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021. Michael Wilson, a Navy veteran, will be the Grand Marshal of the 2022 parade.

Environmental groups file protest against Turnpike Expansion

A coalition of eight environmental groups filed a formal rule making petition with the state Department of Transportation and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, challenging the New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s $4.7 billion proposal to widen the Newark Bay-Hudson County extension to and from the Holland Tunnel while it is in the permitting process.

The petition contends both haven’t complied with two of Gov. Phil Murphy’s Executive Orders, to reduce greenhouse gases by 50% by 2030 and that state agencies consider environmental justice for overburdened and minority communities in all their decision making. The DOT and the NJTA have five months to either grant the petition and initiate a rule-making proceeding or deny the petition giving written reasons for the denial.

DWI charged dropped against state Senator Sandra Cunningham

State Senator Sandra Cunningham, 71, was charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) and careless driving on March 4, 2021, after sideswiping two parked cars near her home in Jersey City at approximately 9:30 a.m. On May 12, the Cunningham, who represents the 31st Legislative District encompassing Bayonne and parts of Jersey City, had her case dismissed after a brief virtual hearing in Bergen County Superior Court. Prosecutors said they lack enough evidence to prove their case.

Man shot in county park

A man has been shot in Stephen R. Gregg Park, according to the Bayonne Police Department. The county park is located off of Kennedy Boulevard, between 48th and 37th Streets. Officers responded to the park on a report of a male who had been shot with a handgun at approximately 8:15 p.m.

Currently, this remains an active and ongoing investigation by the Bayonne Police Detective Bureau. As such, Police Captain Eric Amato would only confirm that an adult male suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center to be treated. No arrest has been made as of yet. The Bayonne Police Department has not released any other information.
