Food Truck Festival returns to much success

Bayonne held its third-ever Food Truck Festival on May 14, with many attending the annual event after a two year hiatus. First offered in 2018, the festival was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, city officials decided conditions were stable enough to have the festival come back in full force in 2022, although it was delayed a week from May 7 to May 14 due to inclement weather, and everything went off without a hitch as crowds of residents taking advantage of the many choices of food trucks and other vendors.

Bayonne holds ‘soft opening’ of Morris Park

Bayonne has held a “soft opening” of Dr. David Morris Park on Broadway and 47th Street. The reopening of the park came after renovations that the redeveloper The L Group were required to perform on the property next door, the BayOne mixed-use commercial and residential building. City Council President and former mayoral challenger Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski criticized the opening as “rushed” since it was without a monument to Dr. David Morris, while Davis said a “grand reopening” would occur soon.

Buddy Baseball opening day kicks off summer recreation

Bayonne marked the start of the Buddy Baseball League season with a parade on opening day, Saturday, May 14. The league is called Buddy Baseball because it allows developmentally and physically challenged youth to participate in playing baseball with the assistance of a “buddy.” The program is open to Bayonne residents three to adult, and involves “buddies” helping each player based on their various needs, from something as simple as being a motivator to play, to helping a player at bat or while they round the bases.

Collins Park renovations progressing

Phase II of Dennis Collins Park rehabilitation at 1st Street in Bayonne is nearing completion. The city has made major strides in the renovation of the park since the last update in July of 2021, when the park was being remediated by PPG. Phase II entails the construction of new basketball courts, playgrounds, and handicapped entrances, as well as the reconstruction of the parking lot.

Hudson officials swoon over CarePoint transition to nonprofit

As CarePoint Health now owns a majority interest in CarePoint’s Bayonne Medical Center, following the donation of CarePoint founder and Clover Health CEO Vivek Garipalli’s majority interest in the three hospitals to the non-profit. The move prompted the praise of: Bayonne Mayor James Davis, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, Union City mayor and state Senator for the 33rd Legislative District Brian Stack, state Senator for the 31st Legislative District Senator Sandra Cunningham, Assemblywoman Angela McKnight of the 31st Legislative District, Assemblywoman Annette Chapparo of the 33rd Legislative District, and Assemblyman Raj Mukherji also of the 33rd Legislative District.

Bayonne establishes TNR program

Bayonne has established a trap, neuter, and release (TNR) program to cope with the feral cat population in the city. The NJ Humane Society, which is based out of West New York, saw its animal control contract with the city increased by $25,000 to allow the operation of the TNR program. The organization is run by Geoffrey Santini and offers animal control and rescue services and owns a no-kill shelter at 6412 Dewey Avenue.

Bayonne council enters agreement for new parking lots

Bayonne has entered into a license agreement with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) for two new parking lots underneath the Bayonne Bridge. The parking lots would be located under the bridge between West 3rd Street and Juliette Street, and another between West 4th Street and Margaret Street. The city will pay an annual $1 fee for each of the public parking lots.
