Davis urges residents to help mitigate spread of virus amid COVID-19 uptick

The Bayonne mayor said hospitalizations remain low but people should be careful as the summer gatherings occur

Bayonne is seeing an uptick in COVID-19 cases, and is subsequently asking city residents to take preventative measures to mitigate the virus spread, according to Mayor James Davis.

“As we move into the summer months, we need to continue to remind residents about the need to curb the speed of Coronavirus,” Davis said. “We have seen upticks in cases throughout our city.”

As more events kick off in the summer months, such as the return of the Memorial Day Parade in the city, Davis is urging residents to take precaution.

“With proms, graduations, and family gatherings increasing, we must reiterate our message of safety,” Davis said. “I ask that everyone practice the safety measures that have been in place over the last two years to help curb the spread.”

Davis and the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management no longer report the active case count or positivity rate in the city due to the prevalence of at-home test kits, the widespread availability of testing, and the lack of a municipal testing site.

While she didn’t give an exact number either for the same reasons, Health Officer Michele O’Reilly said that cases had seen a week by week increase ramping up in recent weeks. However, Davis noted hospitalizations remain low at Bayonne Medical Center, a number that is still able to be calculated.

“On a good note, we have only two residents with COVID-19 currently admitted to our medical center,” Davis said. “Thank you to everyone who continues to practice common sense approaches to avoiding this virus.”
