Bayonne has raised the base price of its taxi and limousine fares for the first time in many years.
The City Council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance at its May meeting. The fares for taxis and limousines were either raised by $3 under each respective category, or remained the same, according to the ordinance.
What it will cost to get from Point A to Point B
For one or more passengers who board as a group, between two points in the city, unless otherwise specified the rate is now $9.25. This is an increase from $6.25.

For senior citizens, or disabled individuals residing in the city, the fare is now $5.25 for one or more passengers who board as a group, between two points in the city. This is an increase from $3.75.
Other aspects of the ordinance
For discount purposes the person must present to the driver either an Office on Aging card indicating a minimum age of 60, a Medicare Card or a Disabled Veteran’s Identification Card issued by the Veteran’s Administration. The discount does not apply to wheelchair accessible vans, according to the ordinance.
Meanwhile, many fares are remaining the same. Specifically fares for rides to and from the Cape Liberty Cruise Port to surrounding transit hubs.
From the Cape Liberty Cruise Port to Newark International Airport, the fare remains $35 plus tolls. From Cape Liberty Cruise Port to Kennedy International Airport, the fare remains $80 plus tolls. From Cape Liberty Cruise Port to La Guardia Airport, the fare is still $85 plus tolls. From Cape Liberty Cruise Port to Grand Central Station, the fare remains $75 plus tolls. From Cape Liberty Cruise Port to Newark Penn Station, the fare is still $35 plus tolls. From Cape Liberty Cruise Port to New York Penn Station, the fare remains $70 plus tolls. And from Cape Liberty Cruise Port to NYC Port Authority, the fare is still $70 plus tolls.
Between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., there will be a surcharge of $0.50 in addition to the prescribed fare. For each additional stop, there will be a charge of $1.75. The charge for waiting time will be $12 per hour. For transporting a trunk or large baby carriage or the like, the fee is $1.
First rate increase in nearly a decade
At the May meeting, City Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski explained that the base price of the taxi and limo fares had remained the same for almost one decade.
“This is an increase in the taxi cab and limo fares,” Ashe-Nadrowski said. “They’re increasing them all basically by three dollars. They have not had a rate increase in about eight years or longer. That’s what this is all about.”
After the meeting, Law Director Jay Coffey told the Bayonne Community News that while the council had temporarily raised fares to accommodate high gas prices, they had not raised the base price in quite some time. The city has the power to regulate the rates through the council via ordinances.
Coffey said that this rate increase came at the request of the last taxi company based out of Bayonne. The move aims to somewhat help amid competition with popular ride-sharing applications such as Uber and Lyft, as well as record high prices at the gas pump due to inflation. And the increases also aim to help limousine businesses in the city as well.
